Back Home and Ready to Deflate

It was hard to leave mom yesterday morning to head home, but I think she was ready for me to go.  My sister, brother-in-law and nephew will be visiting her starting on Friday, so mom need’s some downtime.  Not sure she will get much as she is very well known and liked in her community and seems to have a lot of drop-ins.  The passing of my step-father is a huge weight off her shoulders.  She misses him but at the same time knows that his suffering is over.  I think she’ll be just fine.

When I weighed myself this morning and saw a four pound gain (385), I wasn’t surprised.  It’s only temporary and I expect to have it off and more by next Sunday.  Mom pushed and pushed food on me as if she was receiving some kind of monetary kickback for anything she could get me to put in my mouth.  I don’t think I have said “no thanks” as many times as I did in the last four days ever in my life.  Good grief woman, stop!  Even though I was able to less than I normally would at her house, I did eat more than I wanted.  It was mostly the wrong kinds of food…and salt.  I am so swollen and bloated, I feel like I could pop.  My feet and ankles are huge and I am not sure any of my shoes will fit now.

While at mom’s I was able to do some walking.  The weather was beautiful and I took advantage of the privacy her lot provides.  I would like to continue walking this week since the sun is supposed to stick around.  However, now I won’t have the privacy.  I’ve mentioned before that I do not like being in public.  I’m uncomfortable with it but it has kept me indoors for too long and I plan to conquer that fear this year summer.  Since I am working from home today, I will take a walk at lunch time.  It will be small, but 1) it will be outside and 2) better than not walking.

Now that I am home, I can eat the way I would like.  The plan is to follow the Whole30 approach, well most of it.  A lot of people have been talking about the Whole30 lately, so if you haven’t already heard of it you can check it out here.  I won’t be doing the 30 day challenge.  I tried that once and with all the changes all at once, and me being super strict, I failed. Hmmm, that sounds like an excuse...moving on. I will be following 95% or more of it though and I think for me that will be just fine.  The reason I say ~95% following, is that I may have honey or small amounts of bacon from time to time. I plan on eliminating grains, legumes, white potatoes, dairy, sugar and artificial sweeteners.  So goodbye bread, beans, milk, butter, chocolate and diet soda.  I’m not saying that I will never ever have these foods, but for the foreseeable future, I would like to stay away.  Since I eat most of them daily, giving them up will be challenging.  Nevertheless, I am determined.  My husband isn’t jumping on board but is supportive.

Is Whole30 just another name for Paleo?  I think they are similar, but not exactly the same.  I don’t much about Paleo.  I’ve read "It Starts With Food", by the founders of the Whole30.  Maybe I will start reading some Paleo books.  I’ve tried all kinds of ways to lose weight, from Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-Systems, Optifast, counting calories and more.  I now believe I need to just eat as healthy as I can by eating whole foods rather than processed. Simple and clean will be key.  I’m excited to give it a try and hopefully see my weight and blood sugar readings coming down.

Have you heard of the Whole30?  Or do you eat a Paleo plate?  If you have any suggestions for good Paleo reads, I would love to check them out.

Thanks for stopping by,
Roly

  1. Good luck on the Whole30 plan (it's a great plan, but for long term success - I often only follow it about 90-95% myself)!

    1. Thanks Jeanette! I think 90-95% would be great for the long term and a total shift from what I am doing now.

  2. Hi Roly, the first Paleo book that I'm aware of is called The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain, Ph.D. It pretty much gives the basics. It was revised around 2011 with updated medical and scientific info. There are so many similar diets that are almost identical, just different titles that to me, it's like they are all trying to re-invent the wheel and give it a new name. Do you read Holly's Blog? http://www.300poundsdown.com/ She wrote about her fears, when she was over 400 lbs and they sound similar.

    1. @Marc - Thanks for the book title, I will check it out. I think I came across Holly's site once but couldn't remember how to get back, thanks for the link.

  5. Best of luck with the Whole 30. I think I already told you it did wonders for my sister and now she follows it about 90-95% too. She lost a good amount of weight and she just looks better overall!

Drink a ton of water this week and you will feel better by the end of it. That combined with your walking and tracking - you've got this!!

    1. @Tina - thank you for the wishes. Yes, I need to force the water this week. Shouldn't be too much of a problem since I won't be drinking soda this week. Yey for your sister!

  6. Even a little bit of walking will help you! You will start to find you have more energy and the walking also helped clear my head if I was stressed or worried. Good Luck, you can do it!

    1. Katrin, thanks for the encouragement. More energy would be soooo nice. I did take a walk at lunch time. I made it around the small loop in the park. It took me about 14 minutes, but I had to stop several times to give my back and legs a rest. Boy am I out of shape.

  7. The more you get out and walk (in public) the easier it will become. I do better with baby steps than big changes especially with food. My moms not so much a food pusher, but if I refuse something unhealthy she will roll her eye's, ugh.

  8. I am sure your Momma was just giving you love through her food - I do that all the time!

And so happy you are going outside - I know its hard and a fear of yours, but its worth it!

I did Paleo for about a week - it was super hard to meal plan and my husband wasn't all over it, so after a week of making separate meals I just went back to eating healthy.

  9. I don't like walking in public either, and I live in the boonies! I've started making myself go out though, my excuse is that it's for my dog. She needs to get out and see the world. :) I don't know much about the Whole30, but I'm skimming the webpage now because I have heard it mentioned before and I know of a couple others on it. I hope it works out for you!

On the food pushing, that would drive me crazy. My mom sort of does the offering of the food, but then the criticizing if I eat any of it. It's kind of like a minefield.

  10. As you probably know from my blog, I follow strict Paleo most of the time and so does my family. I'm also doing the Whole30 right now, which is stricter than the Paleo diet I follow the vast majority of the time.

From a wellness perspecitve, I can't think of a better way of eating. To me it's about eating to be healthy -- losing weight is a natural consequence of that. It's also pretty easy to prepare for - just grill up a bunch of meat and stock your fridge with veggies & healthy fats. Mix & match for healthy meals all week :)

My fav Paleo read is Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilipo (I think I massacred her last name). Great information about Paleo, meal plans and lots of good recipes. I think you will really like it.

  11. I totally know how hard it can be when people, especially family members try to push food on you, even though they understand what you are doing and support your goals, they can't help it. My mom is the same way, she feels like if she can't feel me food I like then she isn't doing a good job. Her way of celebrating something is offering up food or treats, it is hard because I know she is trying to show she loves me, but it also isn't helpful for my health...Glad you are able to get in a nice walk today!

  12. I haven't heard of the whole 30 but did hear about Paleo. I think it's a bit simular to low carb eating which I did for a while but that's not for me. Like Biz I try to eat as healthy as possible.

If it's hard to give up all the things you mention all at once, try eliminate one product at a time. Changing a lifestyle is difficult and takes time but I'm positive you will do this.

Sorry to hear you don't like to go out in public, hopefully that will turn around soon for you and you feel more confident to go outside.

  13. Food pushers. It's so common even among family members! It can be really hard to say no over and over again can't it!

Enjoy your walk and I'm all for eating real food but don't follow Paleo so can't help you much there. :)

  14. I never heard of Whole 30 and don't know much about Paleo, so I am not much help there!

Glad your mom seems to be doing okay. I laughed at your description, because my mom is the same way, saying "eat eat eat" like she gets a kickback for everything I eat too.
