Classic Mistake

This weekend I made a classic fat person move.

Knowing that I was going to fully commit myself to a new way of eating the next day, I allowed myself a final unhealthy meal.  That was Thursday night.  The problem (one of the problems) is that I didn’t start on Friday and recommitted to starting on Saturday.  This meant one more night of take out before the big start.  What a mess I am.  I didn’t start on Saturday nor did I start on Sunday.  Rather than bore you with how disappointed and disgusted I am with myself, I will just tell you that it happened and it is over.

I debated whether or not to mention my failure here or pretend like everything was fine.  Obviously, I decided to spill my guts and come clean.  I’m not in to cover ups and need to own up to the reasons why the scale isn’t showing any weight-loss.  I’ve been home a week so I can no longer blame mom for forcing food on me.  It’s all on me.

Speaking of coming “clean”, today I am making a change.  The same change that I have wanted to do and have been talking about for a month now.  I am cutting out the processed foods and will be eating “clean”.  Whole foods such as lean meats, vegetables and some fruit are on the plan.  Sugar, added sugar, artificial sweeteners, legumes, dairy and grains are off the list for now.  Saying and doing it are two different beasts.  If you don’t believe that I am ready to make the change or will make the change, I don’t blame you.  I haven’t given you any reason to believe me.  Heck, I have trouble believing I will make the change myself.  No, I need to prove myself by actually doing it.  The proof will be my weigh-in next Sunday.  If I am eating on plan there is no way that the scale doesn’t show a loss next Sunday.

Besides talking the talk, what am I doing to ensure that I can make this change?  Well, groceries have been bought.  That’s the first step.  Let’s be honest, that’s not much of a step.  I’ve had healthy groceries in the house for months now and most (80% or more) of them end up in the garbage bin the following week.  The second thing that I have done is prepped some of the food.  Yesterday, I roasted some vegetables.  This afternoon I will be doing more and cooking some chicken and hamburger.  Okay, that second step is still in work, so not much confidence there.  The third step is that I have a loose meal plan for the week.  I am most vulnerable to eat out on the days that I work from the office (Tues. – Thurs.), so to make things easier, I will have vegetables and meats that have been precooked and only need warmed.  Quick and easy will be the name of the game.  This is not a fool proof plan, but it’s what I am working with.

In other news, the weather sucks.  The sun is gone and the rain has returned.  Sometimes it feels like Seattle is just one big rain forest.  Rain, rain and more rain.  It’s green though.  Very green.  It probably doesn’t rain as much as you think it does, but some years are worse than others and some months just suck.  I look forward to July 5th through September.  That’s our sunny warm time.  This concludes the weather segment of today’s blog.

Are you prepared for this week?  Do you create a meal plan or don’t really need one?   Whatever you do to keep on plan, I hope you have a great week.

  1. Having your plan in place is the first step towards actually following your plan! :) I think you are doing great to plan ahead for your trickiest days. Best wishes with the unprocessed junk! I definitely need to do better about processed foods lately. Ugh!

    1. Thanks Staci. Giving up the diet soda will be one of the hardest. Okay, cheese will be missed too. Good luck this week.

  2. Don't fret about yesterday. It causes depression. Don't worry about tomorrow. It causes anxiety. Focus on today. Can you stay on course for 3 hours at a time? Of course you can! Stay on course for six 3 hour sets and it's time to go to bed. Start over the next morning. I'm not being mean...this is how I started because I was so used to the convenience of eating whatever, whenever. Healthy eating requires real planning. I wasn't used to planning food. Food happened. I'm still on my journey. Wishing you peace and good luck with yours:)

    1. Three hour sets sounds reasonable. Thanks Marc, I will give it a try.

  3. I have lots of mess up days and weekends... Weight loss/maintenance happened when my successful days far outweighed the messing up... Took a lot of learning

  4. We don't have to be perfect at this, we just have to keep moving forward. You'll find your groove if you continue to try!

    1. Thanks Cammy, I will never quit trying, but at the same time, I need to put some wins in the bucket soon. I plan to make this week a win.

  5. When I started a new plan, I needed a planned out week. Once it becomes a habit, then you don't need to think farther ahead than a day or two at a time (which works out well because fresh produce spoils quickly, so frequent trips to the store is better anyway.)

    1. Yes, I'm thinking a couple of trips to the store each week are needed if I plan to eat a bunch of produce. Meal planning so far is tough for me, but I know the more I do it, the easier it will become. Looking forward to that day.

  6. I have done that so many times! I keep saying "tomorrow" until another week has gone by.

I try to be honest and up front on my blog too, so I am glad you wrote about it. I agree with the comment above, it's not about being perfect but about improvement.

    1. Yes, if I can't be honest in my blog then why have one. It will get boring real quick if all I do is fail though. This week will be a different story. Have a great week.

  7. You did the best possible thing you could do and prepared yourself for the week ahead. I know If I don't plan ahead, that's when the takeout or eating out meals happen and it throws everything off. I treat myself to already cut up veggies or fruit if I know that my prep time is limited.

Lately I've been cooking a few pounds of chicken breast in the crock pot with some chicken broth and then shredding it. You can do so much with shredded chicken for the week - Mexican inspired meals are a favorite!

    1. Meal planning and prepping veggies/other foods will take some time before becoming a habit and I know I will fight it. I'm lazy, but trying not to be. Someday I can lose that title. Cooking chicken in the crock pot is a great idea that I will do next week for sure.

  8. I didn't meal plan this week at all since I am trying to use up all the stuff I have, and it hasn't been the healthiest of eats, that's for sure!

I have to keep reminding myself that just because I am going on vacation next week doesn't mean I can eat whatever I want - I need to keep mindful and if I come back with just a 2 pound gain in 10 days, I'll consider myself lucky!

Hugs Roxy - you can do it!!

    1. I seem to have that problem before, during and after vacations. Hope you have a great trip.

  9. This journey is difficult and there will be more difficult times. We all fall of the wagon every now and then but we all pick it up and move on, like you do. No one will blame you for this. Just keep trying, you will succeed eventually.

I have been meal planning since 1994. At that time I worked 5 times a week and I didn't want to have to think about dinner everyday after a work day. So every weekend I sit down and plan meals. There are weeks I follow my planning 100% but there are weeks where I don't follow it completely and get take out or make something different. I only plan dinners on weekdays because breakfast is usually the same and I buy salads at work for lunch.

  12. Girl, I lived in cheat meal land! I was a total "last hurrah" kind of gal. I love that last greasy, cheesy, carb loaded meal before the big day. But much like you described the big day would never come. I'd always find some excuse to take the binging into the next few days.
But you look like you are making some changes that will help stop cheat meals dead in their tracks. Goodluck! I can't wait to see what the future holds for you.
