Doing better but could do more

The meal planning and prep work that I did this weekend has helped my eating this week.  So far, most meals have been prepared at home.  That’s right, I said most meals, not all.  Because I didn’t finish all the prep work that I had wanted to do this weekend, my laziness won out a couple of times and either I didn’t pack a lunch or I didn’t fight my temptations to eat out.

I’m eating somewhat better than I have in the last few weeks.  I mean I am actually eating vegetables again and I don’t mean potatoes.  I even tried a new vegetable.  Well, not really new.  As a kid, my mom used to steam brussel sprouts often.  I didn’t care for them but would usually digest a few to make her happy.  Lately, everywhere I look I am reading about people roasting brussel sprouts and how much they like them.  After weeks of buying them only to not use them and throw them in the trash come garbage day, I roasted some Tuesday night.  While I thought they tasted better than I remembered from childhood, I was disappointed and will not be trying them again anytime soon.  At least now I know and can quit wasting money and food.

Tomorrow is another chance to eat well and on plan.  I’m looking forward to it.  The fact that it is a Friday is just a bonus.  Hope you enjoy your Friday as well.

  1. I just finally learned to like brussels sprouts! It sounds like you are doing all the right things and including more veggies into your diet is always a good thing!

    1. Thanks Diane. It seemed like it had been awhile since I had vegetables. I still need to do better and today I will.

  2. I never liked brussels sprouts as a kid, and I don't eat them now! Same with cauliflower. Yuck. Good thing I like spinach.

Meal planning is so smart. I eat so much better when I plan, which reminds me, I really need to get back to that!

    1. My mom used to put dill on the brussel sprouts, so if I ever try them again I will add some dill. I do like cauliflower though.

  3. I have never learned to like brussels sprouts! They are vile! There are plenty of other veggies I like much better.

Getting started is very hard...For 20 years I yo-yo-dieted, the same poundage on and off. Start a diet/stop a diet, etc. Just the fact that you feel you are ready is a BIG deal!

A book that really helped me is Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. He thinks carbs are evil, and I tend to think he's right. Right now, I'm following a low carb/high fat plan, but I'm always open to new ideas!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Kaki. As a diabetic that hasn't quite got control of her blood sugar, I also think carbs aren't doing me any good.

  4. My SIL loves brussel sprouts, so I cook them up for her when I make her food for the week (not sure if you know this but I cook my SIL her lunches every week and she pays me $25 a week - she stops by every Sunday to pick up her food - I am like a one person Seattle Sutton!).

Anyway, I've made them in salads, roasted them, steamed them, and ick. I still don't like them!

Hang in there - you are doing great!

  5. I found you from Behold the Turtle, I look forward to following your journey! I HATE brussels sprouts! I remembered thinking they were ok as a kid, so I recently tried roasting them too. I ate half of one and thought I would throw up. The rest went in the trash! Lol!
    Have a good weekend!

  6. I always liked brussel sprouts as a kid, so I like them even more now. But my brother hates them--calls them vitamin balls LOL.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other vegetables to try and enjoy!

  7. I don't remember liking brussel spouts either. I love broccoli and squash. Those may be the only veggies I eat on a daily basis but it's at least a veggie a day, right?

  9. I laughed when I read about the brussel sprouts. I had them as a kid and thought they were awful. I tried them again a few months ago and they were tolerable....but I don't think I'd eat them on purpose again. yuck! Are you using recipes for your meals? I know I need to get some Paleo recipes out so I can plan better meals for this coming week. I've been flying by the seat of my pants the last couple weeks and it's starting to wear on me.

  10. Good for you! I'm with you on the brussels sprouts. I couldn't hack them either. But like you, I'll try other ones instead. :)

  11. When I was a child my mom would give me many different vegetables and of course I didn't like them at all. Growing up was basically just meat and potatoes. Mom made many different potato dishes. Once I became an adult, well I started adding a litle more veggies. Truthfully I continue to cook like my mom with all the potatoes, hence a lot of weight piled on. Currently today, I cook with many veggies but what helps alot is the many different types of herbs and spices. Also too I have found many recipes which lots of them are favorites. One step at a time is the trick. Research and experiment will help temendously.

    Many hugs,

  12. I LOVE brussel sprouts! I hated them as a kid, but I steam the heck out of them and drown them in Braggs aminos and Molly McButter spice... yummo!

  13. I like them, but don't want tons of them. We just steam them and than add just a tad bit of butter and salt (I know, not to good for you but it's just a tiny bit).
1 step at a time, you're doing it. Keep it up.
    Blessings. Have a great weekend!

  15. I agree with you on the brussels sprouts. I have a friend who LOVES them, and I will eat them when she prepares them, but don't go out of my way to make them myself.

I do LOVE vegetables, however. It was a slow change, but now I crave them. Don't get me wrong, I have the non-healthy cravings too, but honestly, not as much as I used to.

I love peppers. I like to buy a huge batch of them, chop them up, and I keep some in the fridge at all times, and freeze the rest in small bunches to take out as needed. They're great in everything, really Especially when pan-roasted.

Keep at it! It's fun to read your progress (and recognizing the pitfalls is progress too). I am an infrequent blogger, but also working to get to my potential! http://diaryofafutureformerfatchick.blogspot.com/
