Just to say "Hi"

My husband has had training the first three days of this week which is putting us off our normal schedule.  Late days in the office has this girl T-I-R-E-D.   Tomorrow should be our regular eight hour shift and then working from home on Friday.

Our eating has not been well this week.  Breakfast and lunch have been reasonable, but by time dinner comes around we have been too tired and resorted to take out.  Darn, an excuse found its way again. Even though I thought about it, I didn’t follow through and prepare meals for these nights.  The week is not over and I will finish it strong, starting with eating better all day tomorrow.

On Monday, I went to the park by myself to take a walk.  There weren’t too many people at the park, otherwise I might not have gotten out of the car.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to do much, but wanted to start somewhere.  Actually, I started walking last week while at mom’s.  However the walking done last week was in short bursts of maybe five minutes at a time.  I would do several short bursts a day to help loosen up the legs which were feeling quite tight (as they are again this week).

Monday, I wanted to make it around a small loop at the park.  I was a bit nervous because there is no place to sit down and rest on this loop.  It turns out the loop took me about fourteen minutes.  I had to stop a couple of times because my back and/or shoulders were hurting.  After I finished the loop, I wanted to push myself to do more, but by then my back was really achy and my hamstrings were as well.  Rather than tire out the back too much, I stopped.  While it wasn’t a great distance, it’s a start and I’m glad that I did it.  Now, I just need to get back there and do it again.  Maybe I will tomorrow evening.

Thanks for all the comments on my last post and the suggestions regarding Paleo.  I will be ordering some books and trying to learn more about it, especially recipes.

How is your week going?  Got sun?  We do and it has been nice, but it will be changing by the weekend.  Come on, it’s Seattle, what else would I expect.  Have a great one!

  1. Hi! Awesome sunshine today! That is terrific that you are beginning a walking regime. Do not overdue. Do what you are comfortable with. On my first deliberate walk out of the house and further than the car, I walked to a street called Hope from the street I live on which is called Tubbie Road. Is that ironic or what? I stopped to rest and a lady in a pickup truck stopped and asked me if I needed a ride or her to call 911 for me. I guess she thought I looked old and ill or a good heart attack candidate.

    1. Seriously, Hope and Tubbie...that is too funny. I was walking at the park last summer and was resting bending my back way back when a lady stopped to ask me if I needed help. It probably won't be the last time I look as if I am in dire shape and help is needed.

    2. LOL, Marc that is too funny about the road names. Irony has a way, huh?

  2. Do you have a crockpot? You could prepare dinner before you left in the morning when you know you will be too tired to cook when you get home.

  3. You don't need recipes for Paleo. Grill or roast some meat. Keep eggs on hand. Put everything on top of a pile of veggies, raw (preferable) or steamed. Have a piece or two of fruit per day, and an ounce of nuts. Everything you need to know is here for free:

The simpler the better. Using almond flour to make "Paleo muffins" doesn't help anyone learn to eliminate crap from their diet and bullshit from their life.

A sample breakfast: two whole eggs, a baked sweet potato, half an avocado

Lunch: 3-5 cups of raw veggies (baby spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers), 4-6 ounces of grilled chicken thigh(seasonings: kosher salt, black pepper, rosemary), 2 tbs olive oil + balsamic vinegar

Dinner: 4-6 ounces of (whatever protein you want; I eat a lot of chicken!), 2-3 cups steamed veggies (zucchini is great), half an avocado

Throw in a cup of berries somewhere, some nuts...that's all you need to do. Make several pounds of chicken in advance, keep in the fridge ready to go. Boil up a dozen eggs and peel them when you "don't have time" to make dinner; slice up two, eat a pile of steamed veggies (plain frozen veggies are fine -- you can eat an entire bag of steamed broccoli and cauliflower) and put some olive oil or coconut oil on.

Simple, simple, simple. No recipes. A little work: you need to go shopping. You need to do a little cooking -- VERY simple cooking. You need to be ready for a little detox from grains and sugar. That's all there is to it.

    1. Norma, thanks for all the tips. Yep, it does sound simple enough and healthy. I think having the chicken and maybe eggs cooked and on hand and the vegetables cut and ready to go will be key.

    2. Please check out the whole 30 link and just do some looking around online about Paleo, Primal, and clean eating. The one book I would recommend is The Eat-Clean Diet by Tosca Reno; it's not strict Paleo (eating clean does include grains, dairy, legumes in small amounts) but it is all about getting processed crap, sugar, fake sugar, soda, and emotional eating OUT of your life forever. It's my bible.

      Make it happen.

  4. Good for you getting out walking! We've been having amazing weather here (in the 80's with no humidity - although I woke up this morning and it was foggy, so the humidity is back *sigh*) and I've been walking every day with my dog. I second the crock-pot idea, or you can cook up some things in bulk to pull out of the freezer when you have a day like that. I have chicken breasts all coked up and ready to go just for that reason.

    1. I'm no fan of humidity, hope it drys up soon for you. Since I have a tendency to become lazy around dinner time, I will prepare some chicken and/or other meats to have on hand. Thank you.

  5. Don't minimize your accomplishments! Every start is a good one. Taking any steps to get healthier is wonderful. I saw a quote, "You are lapping everyone on the couch". :)

    1. Yes, thank you for the reminder. I'm not trying to put myself down, anything is better than nothing. In my case, small steps really are small. I will push myself to keep doing more, but again the progress will be slow. By the end of summer, my walking should be a different story.

  6. Awesome for getting out and walking!!! I often feel like a "failure" because even older people can pass me on the walks I take, but I try to remember that I'm out there and doing SOMETHING. It beats doing NOTHING, right? Just keep trying!

  7. So proud of you getting out there and walking! Now just add a minute to each day, and before you know it, you'll be walking 30 minutes! Go Roxy! :D

    1. Oh you and that "Roxy". :) Yes, I need to keep at it and keep pushing myself to do more and more. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. So so proud of you!!! You are taking the first steps to changing your life and that's something to be very proud of! You'll be surprised how fast your body gets used to it and you'll be able to more and more. I too hide from people and have a hard time working out in front of others. I shy away because I'm terrified of being judged. Although when I see an overweight person walking or jogging I never think bad things about them, instead I'm thrilled they're putting themselves out there and changing their lives. I don't know why I worry so much about what other people think of me, but I do. Keep up the good work....these small steps will equal big results!

  9. I saw your comment over at Norma's and came over. I want to encourage you to stick with blogs like Norma's and Jenn's and others who have had success. Stay clear of those who have been at it for years and not lost an ounce. They have helped me so much over the last year. Good luck to you.

    1. Beth, thanks for stopping in. I do like what I see at Norma's and Jenn's. They are eating the way I plan to and I hope to learn some from their experience.

  10. Great job getting out there and walking, it might not seem like it but walking can do amazing things for your body. Now that our MN weather isn't snowy and awful I have been trying to get my butt outside and walk my dogs as often as I can and it sure feels good when I get done

  11. Just checking in on you! I hope you are staying strong and I'm so proud of you for getting out there and walking. I know how hard that can be mentally and physically. Keep it up - just a few minutes at a time makes a difference. Believe me - I know!
