Are pigs flying?

There hasn’t been any movement on the scale yet (I’ve been checking), but my eating has been better this week.  It hasn’t been perfect, and that’s okay.  Except for last night, all my meals this week have been prepared at home.

I even cooked dinner on Tuesday night and will again tonight.  I hope my husband doesn’t have a heart attack as I am sure that having me cook two nights in the same week is sure to be quite a shock.  It hasn’t been anything fancy; I’m keeping it simple right now.  Once I get back in the swing of cooking on a regular basis, which let’s face it may take some time, I may look to cook more adventurous recipes or at least with more variety.

Since Monday, I have also been tracking my eats.  I’m hoping this effort helps me stick to my goal of 1500-1800 calories per day.  By the looks of things, not that I needed myfitnesspal to tell me this, I need to start cutting back on the sodium rich foods.  My swollen legs are also a good indicator of this.  Boy, are they swollen.

There is a lot of work to be done on my eating habits (understatement).  I am hoping this week will be the start to some of the changes I need to make.  Eating at home the next few nights would be a huge improvement over last week.

Today is going to be a busy, stressful work day.  Never mind that I will be crossing my fingers all day and hoping that I actually cook dinner as planned tonight instead of making some comment about eating out on the ride home from work today.  The commute home is a weak time for me.

Hope you’re having a great week so far.  Hang in there, Friday is approaching.

  1. crossing your fingers won't help. You just have to commit to yourself that you are going to honor yourself enough to make the dinner, but buy junk. It really only boils down to just that; honoring YOURSELF.

You are worth it! You can do this!

    1. I love what Gwen said. I agree. Honor yourself. That's such a lovely thought for you to tell yourself. :D

  2. I completely understand about that drive home as that has been a tough time for me most of my life too. Not as much anymore but it sure took a lot of practice and hit and misses to get there! Sodium is also evil for me too.

Glad you hare having a better week. Great job on the tracking! :)

    1. My husband and I work together and have a 45 minute ride home. Unfortunately, a couple exits before ours has restaurants we enjoy. It's been way too easy to change any plans we may have had and just stop for dinner. We need to break this habit and the sooner the better.

  3. Congrats on eating more meals at home and tracking. I've had to get a grip on my tracking lately, too, which was definitely slacking. The commute home is a weak time for me, too. By this time of day I'm ready for dinner and a 30 minute drive home seems like a loooong way sometimes. I started bringing small snacks to eat on the way home to tide me over until I get home. Here's to a successful week for us both.

    1. Healthy snacks for the ride home might be the key. I will have to give it a try. Thanks!

  4. Hi Roly, I don't know if this applies to you, but it did apply to me when I first thought about eating healthy. I drank anything BUT water. I would have coffee, soda pop, fruit juice, milk, etc., etc. I read an article that said I needed at least 64 ounces of fresh drinking water daily minimum. I thought that was crazy talk. At that time I was drinking about one to two cups of water each day.

I bought myself a big 101 ounce water jug. I filled it in the morning and drank from it all day. I got the idea from spunkysuzi's blog. Anyway...once I increased my water consumption, the sodium issues went away, and the scales showed their appreciation by moving southward.

    1. Hi Marc, I drink water and one diet Mountain Dew per day. I could stand to drink more water though and I am working on it. I've definitely improved in the last couple of months, but still could drink more. Thanks.

  5. I take it that your husband knows of your plan? Does he support you? Or gives in as he too wants to go out?

I think Sunny has a great idea.

My ride home is usually an hour, I usually try to have a bottle of water and when I start my car, I pop a piece of gum in (I love 'Extra Gum" the one that is called Dessert Delights)and then go straight home.

Stick with your plan, you are so worth it.

    1. Hi Anna, yes my husband knows the plan. If I don't cook, which I normally don't, then it means he has to cook or we eat out. He would rather eat out then slave over the stove (like me). I need to step up and 1)cook and 2) not give him an out when he has already planned to cook. Water and gum are a good strategy, thanks.

  6. My husband and I used to do the same thing. "I will cook tonight. Well, now I am tired so you should cook." "I don't want to cook, we should eat out." It is a viscous cycle. So what we do now is plan all our meals for the week on Friday or Saturday and we each pick a few meals we can cook to be on the menu. That way if one of us really had an off day then the other can step in and cook their meal that night and the next night is the others turn. This has helped us immensely and taken the pressure off of both of us. Plus, once the food is in the house it is harder to justify eating out.

Water and gum in the car is a life saver for me as well. I also save a few almonds from my afternoon snack some days and eat those on the way home. You can do this! Just stick with it and eventually cooking becomes the habit and eating out feels off.

  7. I'm so happy to hear that you are taking steps to help...such as cooking at home and tracking your eating. I agree with the other commenters, it's not about crossing your fingers but reminding yourself that the other choice isn't good for you. It may be a lot easier to just grab food on the way home, but it's a lot worse in the long run.

  8. Maybe you could try to find some take-out that is a better choice? It might not be realistic to think you're going to cook when you both work hard and are stressed. 8 pc nuggets at Chik-fil-a are only 250 calories! It's almost all protein and few carbs (no waffle fries, though). How about a pre-cooked rotisserie chicken from a grocery deli? I do that a lot! Eating out doesn't have to mean you've failed! You can make it work!

  9. Hi I agree with Gwens comment it is commitment, which really I think you realise. Some days we all feel more able to do what we know to be the best thing for our health and family.

    Go Go Go for it

You will be so pleased you did. Keep to a lifestyle change, you only have one life to live and you should do whatever it takes to do the right thing.

Sorry if this is not all sweetness and light but on track with your goal, and the win situation is so worth it

    All the best Jan

  11. Hopefully this comment sticks - I've been having trouble with blogspot blogs lately.

I hope you had a great weekend and did some meal planning for this week! Hugs!

  13. I'm such a planner but meal planning really helps. Especially crock pot meals you can have right when you walk in the door. Put it on low when you leave in the morning and it can cook all day. You can even make the meals ahead of time, freeze them, dump them in the crock pot and go.
