Weigh-in: August 4, 2013

It was no surprise when I stepped on the scale yesterday and saw a three pound gain.  My eating last week was bad, meaning too much of the wrong kinds of food.  The gain is the consequence of my actions.  Yep, I own it.

Previous Weight:  375 lbs
Current Weight:   378 lbs (+3 lbs, boo hoo)

The whining and complaining is out of my system and this is a new week.  The scale will move downward at my next weigh-in.  I am going to try hard to not eat out this week, especially fast food.  Starting today, I am tracking my calories.  My goal is to stick between 1500-1800 calories per day.  I will give this a try for a couple of weeks and then adjust if necessary.  I should start testing my blood glucose also.  I know it is high and I can guess the range, but I will start testing so I can have a record for my next doctor visit.

Yesterday, I did some errands/shopping.  To most folks, this is not a big deal.  Normally I stay home on the weekends.  Seriously, I usually don’t go anywhere unless it is to visit my sister and nephew or take a drive with my husband.  I used to get out and do more, but over the last year or so I don’t seem to go out.  There are a couple of reasons for this.  One is that with my weight being so high I’m not comfortable being in public.  The other is the pain associated with moving around, getting in and out of the car, walking around or walking around while carrying bags.  I know the less I do of these things will only help worsen my situation, making it even more difficult to get out and move around over time.  I’m embarrassed by how pathetic this sounds, but it’s my truth.  Anyhow, I went to three retail stores yesterday and was maybe out and about less than two hours.  The trip wasn’t too bad.  I didn’t notice my back hurting at any time.  However, my knees did hurt getting in and out of the car and are aching more than usual today.  All that said, I need to start doing more than just sitting around the house on the weekends.

How was your weekend?  Any goals for this week?

  1. Rolly, I'm counting on you to make this a good week! Any chance, also, you could maybe try walking 10-15 minutes a day, most days? Just up and down your drive-way or street, just to get the juices flowing, literally? Start small, and build into something bigger as your body adjusts. Everyone starts somewhere. YOU GOT THIS!

  2. Hit the reset button. Good for you getting out of the house for a while yesterday. There are times when I'm embarrassed to be seen, too, but I've gotten to the point where I want to start living life before it's too late. My goals for this week are to get some exercise in, which I've been struggling with lately.

  3. Sooooo, if you do eat out, where will you go? I like Subway - a 6-inch Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki is less than 400 calories - throw in a big ol' glass of ice water and you're set. OR Chic-Fil-A has that tasty grilled chicken sandwich plus you can add a fruit cup - also for less than 400 calories. I don't always have the time (or energy) to cook. Having a back-up eating out plan might help?

  4. Personally, I can't eat out at restaurants without gaining weight that week. I'm also not eating sauces, oils, dressings, melted butter, and any other invisible calories. If you stick to fresh vegetables, and perhaps some fresh fruit (the ones that are lower on the glycemic index), and chicken and eggs, a small bowl of unsweetened old fashioned oats,honestly--that's really what I basically eat and it works wonders. Try it! You'll be amazed what a week of clean eating can do for you. :D

  5. good points from the people above...Each day is a new day! I find myself having to hit the reset button continuously! You are not alone! If I do fast food, I'll do the grilled chix, throw away one bun and ask for extra tomatoes/lettuce and no mayo, then instead of fries I order the kid's apples or fruit choices.....and I like the comment of just starting some activity 10-15 min a day and building up -- wrapping your knees can help with support and pain as well as some strengthening exercises for your knees and hips. If you can find a bariatric exercise physiologist in your area I would highly recommend seeking his/her advice -- they understand what to do so much better than a regular trainer. You may also need to invest in some orthotics to help with your stance and may help with joint and lower back pain until you get some of the weight off.....people don't realize that's the weight not only puts pressure on joints, it also changes the way you move which also causes pain, doing some small things like this may help with that pain and help you to move more...

  6. A thought to if you end up eating out? What about splitting the order with your husband? That way if you do, it'll be half of what you were going to take in (as a sort of back up emergency plan?)

What Tz said is dead on; your weight changes the way your body moves (your skeleton is compressed, your muscles compensate for imbalances and whatnot all over which can cause other imbalances, etc) and that can cause pain because it's not working the way it was intended. Also, getting up and getting your blood flowing (instead of pooling which is dangerous) is really important. What if you planed on walking around 5-10 minutes of every hour? Even if it's just down your hallway back and forth?

  7. Yep, this week is a new week Roly! I love that you got out for a couple hours - you are right, just sitting around isn't going to help the situation any.

Wished I lived near you - we could be walking buddies!!

    Hugs!

  8. Kyra has some good suggestions. Can you be more selective on your foods when you eat out. Just because your eating out it isn't a reason to eat everything. Just because there is bread on the table doesn't mean you need to eat it. It is hard to totally change your whole life. So maybe you can still eat out but just make some different choices. I have never been able to give up eating out. I sometimes ask for a plain chicken breast and some plain vegetables. I ask for my burgers to be lettuce wrapped. Your weight loss is not an overnight journey it will take a while. If you make changes that you can live with you can change yourself.

  9. Raging fires are often started from a single spark. Good for you for giving yourself that little spark!

  10. One of the main things that helped me was reminding myself that if I consistently did the right things, the weight would come off. It's consistency, not perfection that works. You can do this!

  11. GAH! I know this post is about your weigh-in, but I committed to reducing bread products, and then I look on your side bar and see the delicious pic of those rolls. LOL! Dang you, woman!
